Invisible Man, C&P, and Frankenstein all directly deal with man's place in society which is kind of relevant for a bunch of people who are about to be entering society (loosely: political, psychological, spiritual). Heart of Darkness and The Stranger give you some existentialism to give a philosophical basis for that not because it's depressing but because it's the most easy to understand philosophy that's concerned with "where one stands," if you can grasp the literal meaning of existential. What's depressing is that you're probably one of the smarter kids in your class who doesn't just cheat to impress their parents/college/w/e and this is the best the education system has god damn we need a Battle Royale for you sand-headed cretins.
