every military dude I met, who reads novels, has read this series, and swears it's the most inspiring thing they've ever read.

Personally I think it's praiseworthy. The tone is consistent for the characters it's meant to represent (there are multiple narrators) and its imagery is spectacular at points.

To answer OP's question, there are other characters at least as interesting as Croaker is, so I'd say that disqualifies him. He tries and fails at many things.

Rebuttal: Lady looked into multiple futures and saw that Croaker taking her side was her only means of survival, so she seduced him. Her sister always wants what she has because she's petulant and crazy.
It may be contrived, but the attraction of both the story's main babes is, at least not inexplicable.
