Sanderson is a decent writer in principle. His talent is wasted on the drivel he writes though. He has a great talent for making incredible worlds and telling compelling stories but he wastes his gift on shit characters, predictably bad plotpoints and as you noticed the targeting of a younger audience. Most of his works are also very formulaic to be "safe" and to appeal to as many young people as possible by never traveling outside of the usual YA tropes.
Im angry and saddened that he wastes his talent so much. He could be one of the greats, but chooses instead to play it safe and write to market.
