My guess is either Lynch borrowed the loop ("is it future or is it past?") used in The Return from the organising principles of the numogram, or perhaps, through meditation, used his own empty vessel to incubate a parallel system to the time-circuit (IE, artificial time production), giving him as much time as he wanted.
