Hello folks, I just read this here book, "The City & The City". I don't know how I feel about it, but I definitely didn't dislike it.

You guys have any thoughts on this odd little book?

This is one of my favourite books, purely down to the unique and original plot.

Yes, his work does read like a thesaurus threw up on it - which is often considered to be poor writing, and frankly, superfluous - but I enjoyed being forced to keep referring to a dictionary and learning a few new words.

Plus, his use of dialogue was absolutely brilliant. I don't think I've read an author who writes dialogue more realistically (although I can't say if his style of dialogue persists in his other works, as C&C is the only one I've read by him).

I realised that an excellent way of writing dialogue is demonstrated by China Miéville in this book.

He'll spell things phonetically, he'll finish sentences when they're not done, he'll make it seem like jibberish that doesn't make sense until you read it out loud. Throw in full stops arbitrarily, and you'll emulate how people really speak.

Your book 'The City and the City' was an enjoyable read, but it unfortunately reads like a thesaurus threw up on it. Try to tone down the unnecessary and superfluous synonyms in future.

Absolutely brilliant, original story.

Well written and very original. First book by Miéville I've read, and I'm impressed. Will definitely consider reading some of his steampunk.
