hey guys, i'm pretty young and i've been trying to get into poetry. last summer, my girlfriend's brother lent me his copy of "howl" by allen ginsberg. it was the first poetry that ever spoke to me on the same level as a regular novel had. i'm looking for things in a similar vein as allen ginsberg. sorry if i'm coming off as ignorant, i'm not very heavily into literature and i usually stick ti /mu/

Allen Ginsberg. What are your thoughts /lit/? I'm curious to see what might you think of him. And I know he's less of an author and more of a poet but I still think this is the best place for this question.

On a personal note whenever I've read any of his poems (Howl, and America specifically) I've always found to get bored with his consistent America bashing, or crying about how something is unjust, or the madness people are driven to by their own actions etc. Or so that's my perception. (Allen Ginsberg is a whiny hippie, albeit he was probably the first whiny hippie which results in him getting brownie points for actually hating America with original thought.)

For those that don't know about Ginsberg's "Blake Visions" the man was at Columbia at the time, was in his apartment alone in the north Harlem area i believe and was jacking off on his bed and reading Blake's poems "ah sunflower" "little girl lost" and "the sick rose" and then came, began looking out his window, up at the sky. THen he kept reading the book when he heard Blake's (or God through Blake, he comments) voice come booming through to him in the room, reading the poem right along with him. Ginsberg gets this sense that the poem suddenly has so much more meaning to him in his place in life and as a writer and sees the sky again as a hand of God.
so this happens a few more times, he kind of "summons" the voice again i suppose you could say and when it comes to him it puts perspective into his poem reading, he feels that everything is poetically applicable more or less....
(and of corse was a great kick in the ass for him as a poet to see the sights of his days differently)

For those that already know this:
Do you believe it? and what do you take from it?
That Ginsberg was "chosen" to be the next prophetic poet by the old romantic?

Should I writer a paper analyzing "America" or "A Supermarket in California"?

I can't decide.

What does /lit think of the fact there's a movie coming out on the obscenity trial of 'howl' by Allen Ginsberg, and about the whole 'beat generation' thing in general.

personally I think it's a stupid concept for a film but James Franco in it could be redeeming.
