Also, this is my favorite book of all time. Just saying ...

I finished perdido street station ages ago, but randomly the other day the general intention of the book and the metaphor ( particularly pertaining to the slake moths and the dream sickness ) shook loose in my head. I'm sort of ashamed that it took so long for me to realize the heavy handed drugs are death undertones woven into the book.

However now it has me over analyzing every inch of the story and all the characters looking for further meaning. Is there any?

God damn, this fucking book is verbose. I don't know how much more I'd miss if I wasn't reading it on a nook and checking words out with the dictionary (even if the built-in dictionary is shit).

Frankly, it makes me feel shame for my tiny vocabulary. I understand what I'm reading using context and such, but it's still unfortunate that I look at every 10th word and not know what it means.

How do you guys build your lexicons? Just reading books that use those words you don't know?

I keep reading sci-fi books in the hope that I'll discover the sci-fi world of my dreams. It'll never happen.

Has anyone else read this engaging piece of literature?

Hi /lit/

Was wondering if I could get some nice fantasy or sci-fi recommendations.

-I like China Mieville a lot, have recently read 'Embassytown' and it has risen rapidly into my top ten though 'Kraken' didn't do it for me. (Gave it a go, stopped, gave it another go, pretended furiously to like it, couldn't quite manage to come.)
-Mary Gentle's 'Ash: A Secret History' is another favourite.
-Joe Abercrombie's novels are great fun in terms of fantasy novels.
-Although I wouldn't quite describe them as 'fun', I am partial to a bit of 'funny but fucking cynical and depressing' from K.J. Parker and Tom Holt (in history mode, not in comic mode).
-Iain Banks' Culture novels are some of the most thought-provoking sci-fi I have read but filled with unpretentiously spectacular and exciting action scenes of shit blowing up too.

Please recommend me some fun books, /lit.

Let's talk about Perdido Street Station.

Just finished it, and the ending gutted me. I know it's immature to expect everything nice and lovely but it was still a kick in the teeth. I wonder if he rushed it somewhat?

Considering doing my essay on it for this module as well, though I'll see how it goes.

I didn't know I liked fantasy until I read this. Mieville's world is totally engrossing and filled with amazing little details that keep you reading. Which of his books should I read next? Can anyone recommend some other authors that don't write Tolkien derived shit?

Has /lit/ read this book? I'm interested in what you all thought of it. I personally loved how even the demons were afraid of the dreamshit creatures.
