I've been meditating on this passage recently:
>Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
To me this means that we should not bother sharing faith with those who hate God and who wish us ill will, because they will reject the message no matter what. But on the other hand Christ mandates that his message be spread to all nations and peoples. Should we be spending time proselytizing to atheists, antitheists, and antichristians? I don't really know how to reconcile these two ideas. Thoughts?

The most entertaining way to read the Bible is to keep in mind that within the Christan tradition, Jesus is God. So when you read all the old testament stories about God genociding populations, destroying cities, and demanding blood sacrafices, just remember that's Jesus the peace-loving desert hippy doing all those things.

More importantly, why didn't Jesus just say: "And now, my apostles, I will teach you the trinity. There is one God comprised of three parts: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Also, when I ascend to heaven and leave earth I want you to start a church with a pope as the head; cardinals, bishops, and priests will serve below him. And lastly remember to interpret every verse of scripture literally, none of it is allegory. Alright peace out!" That would have saved mankind thousands of years of strife. Instead he spoke in cryptic metaphors and vague spiritual advice.

Sappho, Theognis, Pindar, Plato (not for his own opinions or inclinations, but for the content of his dialogues), Xenophon (ditto), Theocritus, Catullus, Virgil (Eclogues), Horace, Martial, Meleager, Petronius ... well just read this >>/lit/thread/S18910539#p18911132 (This one is a list of homosexuals, however, not writers who wrote homosexual themes)

Sophocles and Aeschylus would probably be included but unfortunately their relevant works have mostly been lost (though there are fragments of pederastic scenes from Sophocles and a few lines from Aeschylus’ Myrmidons). There are homosexual love poems attributed to Plato in Ancient Greek anthologies but these attributions are probably spurious. Similarly, while Virgil and Ovid treated of homosexual themes, and thus warrant inclusion in a homosexual canon, there’s not much to suggest they had any strong homosexual inclinations themselves (Ovid explicitly said he preferred heterosexuality).

I really would like to find a nice relatively definitive list of medieval Islamic poets who treated of homoerotic themes. There’s a lot of ambiguity. I think one of the most interesting sources is Attar of Nishapur. I don’t know if he was interested in homosexuality personally, but he relates a lot of good anecdotes about Mahmud and Ayaz in his various books.

we need a sitcom set in bible times. one episode could be where some roman soldiers come into Jesus's shop and ask him to build a bunch of crosses. then later when hes crucified on the cross he built he looks at the camera and says "I should have added more back support!" *cue laugh track*

>"n-no you don't get it, the doctrine of non-self isn't self-hating, you just didn't read enough sutras, please don't call my death cult life-denying"
Cope, buddhakek. You're free to despise yourself and your life, but don't drag people down with you. Platonism is natural to a soul naturally aligned towards the truth, funny you'd call me a larper when you're most likely a deracinated, anemic and limp-wristed american male who turned to eastern crypto-nihilism as a juvenile act of rebellion against his prot upbringing.
No need to reply with more seethe, I know how it goes with you people.

alright let me rephrase this: a big concept in Christianity is the idea of imitatio christi, the imitation of Christ. most Christians throughout history believed that we need to follow Jesus's example, to live like he lived. Jesus himself says that we should take up our own cross and follow him. why then did Jesus set the example of not starting a family? Gods in other religions, as well as all the prophets of the old testament, did the family routine. it just seems weird to me that Jesus alone would be except from human sexuality (even though he was fully man) and the masculine call to fatherhood.
