Gene Wolfe's "Latro in the Mist" books, Soldier of the Mist / Solder of Arete. Pic fucking related. I was loving these books, and they really lived up to the expectations I had after The Book of the New Sun, and then...THE LAST 10 PAGES.

I just found out that there's now a third book, Soldier of Sidon, so I guess I can hope that all will be made clear. But at the moment I feel like Wolfe has punched me in the head.
