Just finished The End of the Tour and the movie was good but theres no fucking way DFW was solely an "alcoholic" hes as much of a crack as Pynchon. I do think he was sober when he wrote but I doubt he didn't live a bohemian lifestyle like the beats before settling down to write

Just by looking at his face you can tell that he is a hack and most likely a sexual predator. Thats my reasoning not reading Infinite jest

This guy is literally just John Green if he was extremely insecure about his pencil dick and took adderall every day. There is little to no literary merit in the “literature” that this absolute fraud created

>David: I always thought that John --
>Interviewer: John Green?
>David: Yes.
>Interviewer: You read his book, "Looking for Alaska." At least an early version. You were saying?
>David: Uhm... John had a sort of neat dissociative act wherein he assesses the, uhm, way in which, and excuse if I phrase this wrong or if actually I am wrong, but the way in which, um, in which we as extremely educated individuals have this very American way of suspecting that truth and integrity and sincerity manifests itself in a sort of "uneducated" person... Like this sort reverence toward this very American sort of yokel and homegrown and 'American-made' 'intellect' and 'truth' that the educated person is attempting to escape from. Or maybe moreso in John's stories that's complimented with the "uninitiated" teenager. Maybe studying the way that these essential truths sort of coalesce or maybe the idea of inherent truth and initiation into truth. John has this sort of dark wit where he's antagonizing his characters with the conflict between these two schools of thought and castigating them for maybe approaching any sort of intellect in any capacity, and, uh, keeping them in the limbo of this perpetually sincere approach to insincerity. Sorry if I'm not making sense.

1: Archaic euphemism circa 1980s infamously ridiculed by the late American stand-up comic and on-again/off-again political jester George Carlin in his series of skits detailing the weakening linguistic calinesthetic workouts performed by ye olden day politicians yet still vibrantly relevant in the modern-circa-2010ish Western (and, to some extent, the Eastern and Eastern Bloc) era viz. the words 'shellshock' [1a] and 'battle fatigue' and 'post-traumatic' blah blah.

1a: Term *nee* WWII, the brain-rending trauma of artillery fire, natch.

2: No bat shadows bleeding through the screen quite yet, though perhaps one could imagine the charging annular momentum through autumn sunsets casting distended asterisk shadows over one-and-two-quarters[3] of the Tortolita foothills or, alternatively, Houston, one can sure-as-shit suspect what is coming next.

3: Which is, to say, not a 'Royale.'

3.5: paid more-than-ample wage not to watch your ass flattened by a really big guy[4, non-concat natch]

4: 'Nom-de-guerre' Bane at play here vs. anodyne Yuppie naming conventions re: Aidan, Levi, Noa, Jayden, Hunter (minus contrasting surname "Steak" or "Killer"), etc. etc.

5: Infinite Jest, p 488.

6: Ibid.

Was DFW right to off himself at 46? Is it worth growing older and watching your body truly decline, your looks fade and your skills lose their edge etc. Does anybody on /lit/ really wanna be an old man, desexualized, ignored by everyone at parties and in conversation? What kind of life is that?

.“There will come a time when all of us are dead. All of us. There will come a time when there are no human beings remaining to remember that anyone ever existed or that our species ever did anything. There will be no one left to remember Aristotle or Cleopatra, let alone you. Everything that we did and built and wrote and thought and discovered will be forgotten and all of this will have been for naught. Maybe that time is coming soon and maybe it is millions of years away, but even if we survive the collapse of our sun, we will not survive forever. There was time before organisms experienced consciousness, and there will be time after. And if the inevitability of human oblivion worries you, I encourage you to ignore it. God knows that’s what everyone else does.”

You're actually citing DFW's taste to prove a point? DFW? Pic related?

And you're citing the same list that had two Thomas Harris books on it? Is this real? I mean, really? Look, are you just joking around with this shit, or are you actually serious?

What's up with the last one? Do I have to press the button? If I do then what are the approximate time scales of 'fast' and 'slow'? Instantaneous? 100 years? 1000? 10,000? 100,000,000?
