For a first reading of the bible, really any translation will do. Most aren't really that different. It's not like in one, Jesus is a guy who hates homosexuals and immigrants. Get an annotated version, though. It really helps with context.

I got a degree in English Literature from the University of Georgia in the mid 90's

We were required to take three out of these four classes: Shakespeare I, Shakespeare II, Milton, Chaucer. The rest was pretty much up to the student.

I took a survey course in horror literature. Survey courses in poetry and short stories. Romantic poetry (Wordsworth and Coleridge). Victorian literature. I did not read many novels. I did not do much modern stuff.

I wish I had taken Anglo Saxon / Old English.

I wish I had taken the Melville course.

The Milton course was my favorite.

Much of that has been debunked.

When reading non-fiction that makes extraordinary claims, after you close the book google "[title of book] debunked". You owe it to yourself.

Really, OP. Think for yourself.

The phrase "endgame of literature" is so vague it's almost without meeting. Literary criticism is writing which is itself a kind of literature. So it's an endgame of itself?

Is shark the "most evolved" animal?

Is the shift "the final solution" of baseball defense?

>If you don't enjoy reading, there's something wrong with your reading list

This. You should be reading for joy.

It is just nasty porn. With a great deal of violence.

At the end, I was left with the impression that I had been looking very closely at a lot of trees (detailed scenes of violence and porn) and suddenly I could see a horrible forest that I had never noticed before. Just an impression. Cool experience tho. I'll reread it one day, but it will be a very long time.

Story and character are more important than whatever purple prose you're writing

I edit my journal with vi.

It has some light LaTeX markup just so I can print it out. Back it up to a free svn repository.
