As someone who is marathoning 19th century novels where there is a surprising (or unsurprising) amount of French. I just sound it out in my head and guess the meaning from the base words used.

But anyways you described pretty much exactly Atomised/The Elementary Particles by Michel Houellebecq, not sure why you haven't checked it out since it's spammed on this board all the time. I hear his other books have similar themes but it's the only one I've read.
