i am that anon who always tells people to read jean lartéguy even though i'm probably the only one on this board who has heard him, but i strongly you read pic related. in addition to describing how modern soldiers are an exiled caste, it touches directly on your topic.

modern war is fundamentally different from those of the past, which were essentially camping trips culminating in several hour brawls with people right in front of you. now a soldier might spend several terrifying years in combat zone where they and everyone around them could die or be irreparably maimed 24/7, 365, awake or asleep, killed by an enemy they might never see or a mine or a shadowy figure who weaves in and out of non-combatants. see >>45627394
