Seneca's 'On the Shortness of Life' and The History of the Peloponnesian War.
The former is relatively short and a good read so far although he gets a bit aggressive at times.
The latter is an interesting read but damn it's so long it makes me wonder if it's worth reading the whole thing.

Has anyone had any experience reading/writing whilst on Ritalin? My doc is prescribing me some in the coming weeks. I have a tendency to procrastinate and be easily distracted but I've been like that all my life. Does it really help that much?

I think there are similarities as well but only in the sense of him being a vehicle and advocate of an elevated discourse - Peterson being far less articulate than Hitchens.

Christopher Hitchens would be wonderful to read in our current political climate. But Peterson is right about our current social attitudes in that we've all become overly sentimental and desperate to be sincere yet are so afraid of criticism that everything is packaged in these snarky, passive aggressive memes.

Earlier this year in March I was prescribed Valium to combat some anxiety issues I'd been having. At first I'd take it when needed; 1 tablet 2-3 nights a week.
Flash forward to now and I've been taking 3 tablets a night, buying 2mg Xanax of dealers and I'm now slowly tapering off after realising that this is a problem I do not want to have. I already have an addiction to painkillers of which I'm on a suboxone program and the last thing I want is to add another abused substance to my CV.
Needless to say, my short term memory and cognitive functionality has been crippled. Besides the last few months I've been a prolific reader and I love to write and used to do it freelance.
I've spoken to a few medical professionals and I plan on tapering off so that I'll be off it by mid next week but would you guys recommend reading continually to help bolster my cognitive faculties?

Will it help?

Also what books would you recommend to ease myself back into it. I used to love reading non-fiction, political memoirs but I love a good Le Carre novel. Something comfy to ease myself back into the literary bathtub.

TL;DR: Will reading help improve my memory?
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers in advance dudes.

I'm an opiate addict of 8 years. Took Oxycodone habitually until I almost died and am now on a daily dose of Suboxone as an outpatient on the replacement therapy program.

A lot of books romanticise addiction, it's very easy to do. It has an intoxicating mystique that helps bolster the illusion of sexiness that surrounds addiction but the best kind books to read are ones that don't involve addiction. It took me years to realise that I was self-medicating underlying psychological issues but reading things for fun as well as, and I cannot stress this enough, going to the gym.

It's a universal anti-depressant and motivational tool. Lifting weights did wonders. I'm still an addict and Suboxone allows me to live a functional life and at least I don't think about morphine constantly all the time.

I'm working my way through a condensed version of the Western Canon, reading the major works of every time period. What important piece of literature comes after Augustine but before Dante and Chaucer? Aquinas, Song of Roland, Beowulf, and the Nibelungleid are all reccomended but which is the most important to get a sense for the tradition and impact, if I only have time for one?
