What's more mainstream or famous on the US: A hundred years of solitude or let's say any other book written by Faulkner or Hemingway?

I don't think I'll read much more Hemingway

For first half of the novel, I felt really alienated from the events due to the magical realism. But the second half, when you see all of the shitty decisions the previous generations made come back to haunt everyone...

300ish pages into pic related and I'm losing steam like crazy. The first few chapters of this book were so funny and interesting but then he just kept adding character after character and the politicized message behind the war was so heavy handed (hurr both sides are the same, war for the sake of war).

Am I reading this wrong?
Thoughts on this book?
