This ruthless abandonment of such virtuous things as “love” by Mr Martin is reflective of the deeper characteristics of his work, which can be construed as a ruthless abandonment of aesthetic virtues in literature. This window into malaise which has been so thoughtfully provided by Mr Martin for our examination today is more than just the greatest entry into Western Canon (as much as it pains me to use such a eurocentric term) in our lifetimes, but could perhaps be considered the best summation of the anglospheric zetigeist in generations. As this modern world changes ever more around us, and as we ever more change in an attempt to adapt to the ephemeral notionality of the ‘better life’ within it, Mr Martin’s portrayal of a feudal life - a pastoral dream remembered - is a most relevant and timely visitation. More than just the way this portrait has been rendered, in the browns of mud and feces and the red of blood and joyless animal sexuality, it is worth considering how this representation of our past differs from the reality of it. By recasting a world of colour and light as much as of violence and darkness in tones of ochre Mr Martin writes not from a place of authenticity, but to the place where his audience resides. In this way misguided critics of Mr Martin miss the most important piece in the puzzle of how a human being could hold these works up as novels at all, let alone achievements. Mr Martin has written us the best sellers that we deserve.
