When I was a kid I had it in my head that all gay people were like Oscar Wilde, or Stephen Fry, or Alan Turing. I always did very well in school so after I realised my own faggotry, any time I got upset thinking about the life I couldn't have I comforted myself with the idea that being this way was a trade-off for intelligence. Then I got a little older, had to confront the ugly face of contemporary gay culture and my sad little worldview was shattered.
