Ugh, so how do virtue ethicists determine what is and isn't virtuous?

Hello,

Aristotle said hypokeimenon is something which can be predicated by other things, but cannot be a predicate of others.

Anyone familiar with the term HYPOKEIMENON ?

Is anyone a big philosophy fan here? I'm taking a few philosophy courses next semester and I was wondering who/what I should read up on before entering them. Thanks!

Fact:

The end of the common use Aristotelian thought and Metaphysics was the worse thing that ever happened to western philosophy.

One of the best and most truthful opinions on poetry:

"The greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor. It is the one thing that cannot be learned from others; it is also a sign of genius, since a good metaphor implies an eye for resemblance."

-Aristotle, De Poetica, 322 B.C

And one of the worst opinions coming from a critic who influenced in a negative way (directly or indirectly) much of poetry which is being made today:

"Music begins to atrophy when it departs too far from the dance… poetry begins to atrophy when it gets too far from music.”

Ezra Pound, ABC of Literature.

Conclusion: In terms of poetry, metaphor and imagery will always be more important than the sound of words. If both requisites can be conciliated, much better, but the imagery should never be sacrificed for the sake of sound.

Objects that consist of matter have two states: actuality and potentiality. If matter has actuality, then its potentiality is being constantly fulfilled by other matter. This chain of concurrent cause and effect leads to infinite regress unless we introduce an object that exists of pure actuality.

This thing of pure actuality by its very nature must contain all of the attributes of the western god of monotheism, most importantly omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. It must be non-physical, independent of space-time, and it must be all-knowing, because all of these things would imply potentiality otherwise and likewise would fall into infinite regress.

How does science disprove this conception of god? It doesn't, specifically it was designed to circumvent these issues by claiming the default position of verifiable reality is through the scientific method. Naturalism assumes that something must be physical to exist in reality, while at the same time, there is no way that it can verify that this must be the case. Even Kant said science can't make definitive claims for OR AGAINST the existence of the supernatural.
