/lit/,

I want to read Infinite Jest. I know it's a journey and I want to ge tthe most out of it, so how do you think I can go about doing that? I was already told to keep a little log of people with a little background, but should I do something else? Should I read other books of his before I read infinite jest? (I've read Consider the lobster). I say all this because I know this isn't a book that you just pick up and read and expect to totally understand it. Thanks for any help.

So, the band The Decemberists made a music video about the Eschaton scene in IJ. Pretty funny if you ask me. Any other bands have music videos like this?

Refining your tastes is the most effective way to alienate yourself from others in contemporary society. This is especially true when it comes to novels, since very few people read them anyway, and only a tiny fraction bother with novels that are brilliant and challenging.

Discuss.

Am I alone thinking that the whole thing is somehow in Gately's head, probably after whatever the bookie guys did to him, hanging between death and life?

Who think the Ennet House parts would've made a phenomenal book, a possible classic?

Everything else in the book is varyingly less interesting.

I think DFW could've made an excellent book and a good book, the first about addiction and the second about tennis.

Why are so many people reading this book right now?

Also, it has piqued my interest, but I'm broke. Anyone have a pdf link?

I've never read anything by DFW. Should I bother?

Are his books just for angsty try-hards?

You guys are probably going to flame me for this but I can't get over the fact that DFW is a Christian.

I mean this guys IQ has got to be through the roof. How could he believe in such a ridiculous mythology? He just doesn't seem like a person who goes to church and listens to an hour of bullshit about how J.C is great and he saved us etc. Does anyone else feel this way?

Oh god. What the hell?

I understood everything fine until I got to page 30. Can someone explain what happened on pages 30 and 31?
