Augustine's "Confessions". The essential young-person-in-their-20's-getting-their-shit-together book. Good luck.

The part where he talks about the stupid stuff he did in his youth, such as stealing baskets full of pears to throw to pigs, purely to test boundaries and do the opposite of expectations is so relatable. My mind flooded with the idiotic shit I did as a young teen upon reading this section, things to idiotic I won't even mention them out of embarrassment.

honest question /lit/, at what age did you start growing out of atheism?

for me it was when I was 19 and read St. Augustine's Confessions which got me into Plato and eventually like 2-3 years later I read Timaeus

What are your thoughts on Confessions? I'm planning to go through Augustine's major works, such as Confessions and, afterwards, City of God.
I'm preparing myself reading The Bible beforehand, but which books are essential before diving into his Confessions? Also, which Plato's dialogues are interesting to have a grasp before reading Augustine?

I'm a few chapters into Confessions (Pusey translation), and I have to say, I've never read anything like it; perhaps the translator is particularly skillful, or perhaps Augustine's style is somewhat palpable in the English, but I have never enjoyed prose reading so much (obviously I'm not very well-read, but bear with me) – the only thing that comes close for me so far is the Somnium Scipionis, which I read in Latin a few years back, and found particularly beautiful. That said, my Latin is not good enough to read the original Confessions, so I was hoping there would be some other anons who have done so already that would care to comment on the experience.

>also, did anyone else feel such enjoyment reading Confessions? I feel like I may be a sucker for divinity, but there just seems to be something about this work, about the translation. Any similar recommendations?

>also general discussion on early christian writing is much appreciated, I'm making this post to learn
