This is somebody else. With all respect to the anon who rec'd The Geranium, that's very far from her best work (it was a student work, in fact).

Her very best stuff is set forth in half-a-dozen short stories:

-The Life You Save May Be Your Own. Not her very best, but it gives you her characteristic flavor in concise form; that flavor being uncannily like a laughing skeptic if not a cynic, until you work your way through to the other side. -A Good Man Is Hard to Find. (An old lady encounters a serial killer in rural Georgia.)

-Good Country People. (Hulga, a philosophy student with a wooden leg, falls in love with a Bible salesman. Based on a true story (see the notes in LoA volume).)

-A Temple of the Holy Ghost.

-The River.

-Everything that Rises Must Converge.

Her collected letters, The Habit of Being, is *very* good; it was critical to my own adult conversion to Catholicism.

Her essays on literature and the art of writing, a volume called Mystery and Manners, is excellent.

The one-volume Library of America edition of her work is extremely well done. It has a very good selection of her letters, with different and sometimes better notes than are in the earlier-published Habit of Being (there are many interesting biographical details in the notes in the LoA edition that I have not seen elsewhere). It includes most of her important essays, her two novels, and all or most of her short stories. All in one handy volume with a superb introduction.

The Complete Stories is valuable for the Introduction by her frequent editor and publisher, Robert Giroux, in addition to the stories of course.

Flannery O'Connor is actually the single best American author of all time.
Carson McCullers is up there.
Clarice Lispector is one of the greatest latin american writers of all time.
