Vietnam war stories but in a fantasy setting. The story is not about dark lords versus valiant heroes, but the soldiers - the guys doing the actual "work". Magic and even battle magic is prevalent but it is treated as if napalm would be - you just duck and cover when you see it and keep soldiering. It's alright.

I read through the black company this year, haven't read the book that came out this fall, but the older books seemed to have an ending. It didn't have a cliffhanger as far as I could tell, so I don't think you should put off reading BC because of that

Great. Finally some nice information about the origin of the Black Company and the Plain of Glittering Stone, which is a nice concept. Sad about all these dead-tired old men.

The Silver Spike - comfy, started slow but really picked up after we get to know the characters better, like Shed a few books back. There was a disconnect in the beginning when the book didn't follow what happened to Croaker and I only later realized that I was reading a spinoff, because of the ordering on the torrent.
The basement hostage rescue scene was great!
