hey /lit/ the English department at my school is accepting slogans for clothing . I want to enter something, can you give me ideas?
It should be something along the lines of, 'English Majors get their Wordsworth'.
that was the slogan a few years ago.
It has to be a one- or two- liner and it can't be lewd.

I'm reading the Granta Book of the American Short Story (edited by Richard Ford) and really enjoying it. What are some other short story collections that are worth getting? Could be by a single author or multiple, I don't care.

Thanks.

D A V I D F A G G O T W A L R U S

- his library is full of pop self help books, fully marked up. this is what he based his philosophy on.
- killed himself cuz a wannabe pynchon
- ugliest writer of all time: not ugly like a man, but ugly like a woman
- bandana = his security blanket
- he thinks he got us beyond post-modernism, lel, must've never heard (let alone read) levinas etc
- our greatest literary critic, at least most well read, Harold Bloom:
>“You know, I don’t want to be offensive. But ‘Infinite Jest’ [regarded by many as Wallace’s masterpiece] is just awful. It seems ridiculous to have to say it. He can’t think, he can’t write. There’s no discernible talent.”

As Nabokov tells us, we should
>"condemn the fashionable device of entitling a collection of essays or a volume of poetry — or a long poem, alas — with a phrase lifted from a more or less celebrated poetical work of the past. Such titles possess a specious glamour acceptable maybe in the names of vintage wines and plump courtesans but only degrading in regard to the talent that substitutes the easy allusiveness of literacy for original fancy and shifts onto a bust's shoulders the responsibility for ornateness since anybody can flip through a Midsummer Night's Dream or Romeo and Juliet, or, perhaps, the Sonnets and take his pick." (Nabokov 1989, 240)

Yes, friends, I am mad. And you should be too.

To say someone can't Think seems a pretty harsh condemnation. Why do you think Bloom would say that? Even if you don't particularly care for Wallace's writing, you wouldn't say that the dude can't think. There's some of his writing I don't like but even then I have to concede that his points are solid and his logic pretty brilliant.

Personally I think Bloom, having such a hardon for Shakespeare, found dfw's use of the term 'infinite jest' objectionable. That or maybe the language Foster used was too, idk, modern or slangish for Bloom to have considered it literature. What do you think?

You could change it to this, and put the link to the IRC in the News and mention meetings are on Friday and call it a day. That'd be good enough.
