The same people who were nazis and fascists? The same people who had occupied Burma (aka myanmar the country of the speaker) and the same people which currently have the one of the highest income differences in the world, rank in one of the 20 worst in the world for human development, and are engaged in one of the worst ethnic violence and cleansing in the world, and the same people that had *literal* slaves until China banned the practice and continue to speak to the west about how banning that is "authoritarian"? Muh peaceful Buddhism is some bullshit only dumbass westoids believe. Go read on the explanations given by Buddhist scholars and how they explain away nazism and fascism and educate yourself, or go to actual Buddhists in Buddhist countries and ask if they see themselves as the most advanced and peaceful people in the world, and I could just as easily find a Buddhist saying the same thing about Christianity or even Atheism from Tibet.

Here are some obvious ones from a bunch I referred to recently in another thread just of some of my most recent faves: Toni Morrison's A Mercy is probably the best origin story for modern American social/political dynamics that I can think of. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Half of a Yellow Sun and Vikram Seth's Suitable Boy are great at the grand sweeping themes political dramas with the same masterful absorption in characters similar to Tolstoy. Brian Evenson & Ted Chiang pull off the new world creepiness and fresh futurey scientific miracles & fables of Edgar Allen Poe. The bit about Flaubert and the rendering a color could've been describing Ishiguro's Pale View of Hills. Peter Carey's Chemistry of Tears could be read as an argument with God. And while I think it's stupid (and perhaps betrays a lack of reading) to say that Melville and Cather did away with epiphany because they were dealing with grand subject matter, let's consider Marlon James' Brief History which is about the mafia, drug trade political turmoil and an assassination attempt or Rachel Kushner's Telex From Cuba about an expat community in the Cuban Revolution, each could fit nicely in comparison with Melville and Cather respectively. If he just means grand adventures with literary reference points, how about Kamila Shamsie's Home Fire, about immigration and terrorist cells & a retelling of Antigone. James writes about the truth of the heart, I say pick up Jesmyne Ward's Sing Unburied Sing, it cuts to the bone. The inner lives of men and women? Arundhati Roy's God of Small Things, John Crowley's The Solitudes, Emily Fridlund's recent debut History of Wolves. And just a quick browse at what I've read this year, probably 75% of it is from the 21st century, sometimes I think there is so much good stuff that I'll never get to it all.
