Anyone ever watched Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould? I think an adaption of Gravity’s Rainbow where each episode was a short film could be amazing. There are 73 episodes in the novel by my count. A 5-6 hour GR adaption like this would be able to better accommodate the vast differences in tone, setting, and characters… slapstick scenes could be as slapstick as Pynchon imagined them, while more serious scenes like Roger and Jessica’s evensong service could also be played straight. The episodes could be divided by some sort of film reel effect, just like the line of squares resembles film stock in the novel. Or just a two second black screen, maybe.

I think it’s very unlikely that GR will ever have an adaption but I thought of this after watching the Glenn Gould film. Unfortunately the racist shucking and jiving nigger parts would make too many people laugh, the Chaplin-esque parts would confuse people, and the horrifically violent parts would send people running. One can dream I guess. If it were fully realized, it would be like no other movie. Who could play these characters?
