I tried reading Black Company and I gave up a couple of pages in. I have no idea how do you people manage to read it, it was almost physically painful. I get that Cook is a self-taught writer, I get that he wrote on his work breaks, I get that it's written from perspective of a simple man writing a diary or something. But it hurt to read. Instead, I decided to try Book of the New Sun and it was the best decision of my life. I'm ESL but I still can appreciate his prose, and the events aren't nearly as incomprehensible as people meme them to be, you just gotta wait for an explanation sometimes.
