I'm talking about novellas like The Stranger, Of Mice and Men, The Great Gatsby, Old Man and the Sea, Breakfast at Tiffany's etc. 100-140 pages. Is it really true that those masterpieces would not be published in 2019, because publishers want longer books?

Hi /lit/, what book would you recommend for a young man who is smart but has little to no reading experience? A family memeber just turned 18, he's an athlete, no interest in scifi, fantasy or pop-culture in general, balanced mindset, conservative upbringing. I want to provide a bit of an intellectual impulse, if I can, maybe kindle his interest in reading, but it's been hard to find something adequate.

Is the movie Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal the closest will get to seeing someone portrayed similarly to Meursault. Although Jake's character can be noticed as more outgoing I believe the apathetic qualities really overlaps between the two characters.
