The entire Fletch series is "good" at its worst, and "fucking wonderful" at its best. They're quick reads, too. Dialogue heavy.

It's about a newspaper journalist (initially) in a detective role. Great stuff, fun, and funny.

Allow me to make an argument.

A fun mystery novel that's actually a light read, and engrossing through fun dialogue. The main character is a total asshole to everyone, not because he's a bad guy, but because mostly they are. And he's not cynical! In fact, he still has a strong sense of fun.

They made a (fun) Chevy Chase movie of the first book, and an original movie sequel. There are eleven books in the series.

Ahoy /lit/,

I decided I wanted to write a crime/mystery short-story... But now I can't figure out who the murder is. Give me some reasons for murder in an American city of about 4 million people?

Happens in an apartment complex, the victim is a blonde coed killed and left floating in the pool, on a float.

The married fuckbuddy? The boyfriend who just found out about the fuckbuddy? The jealous manager who wasn't getting any? All too obvious. Any ideas?
