a shame he never finished it, but the verse forms of this tale are absolutely wonderful.

It's got some rather dry sections, like the Valaquenta and certain chapters of the Quenta, but it has so many beautiful and majestic scenes throughout.
The Darkening of Valinor,
The Oath of Feanor and the Doom of Mandos,
Fingolfin's battle with Morgoth,
Beren and Luthien,
The Tale of Turin,
Earendel,
I could go on. I love this book so much.
If you want a more detailed version, you can read pic related or Children of Hurin.

Also, I agree 100%

If there could be a novel of the Fall of Gondolin, the collection would be complete, but sadly that's not likely to happen.

Currently reading pic related (I love it), and it's really gotten me interested in epic poetry.
I read Homer many years ago, but that's about it.
What other epic poems does /lit/ recommend?
Particularly I am interested if other 20th century authors have written in this style, but any suggestions will do.
