Life and Fate is another great Russian tome that mostly takes place during the Soviet Union. It is a masterwork, but it is a more challenging read than War & Peace.

This is, I believe, quite possibly the perfect book. If not, then it is certainly the closest we have gotten to an objectively perfect novel, and it's a shame I won't be able to read it for the first time again.

Why did the Гocкoмиздaт ban this book? There's nothing treasonous about it.

I don't understand why this book freaked out the Goskomizdat so much.

I'm currently reading this, and loving it. But how do you deal with the disjointed structure? One chapter it's soldiers in a trench in some random Stalingrad street, the next it's just some girl in her apartment.

This book (aside from being a great literary achievement), made me reconsider some of my prejudices. My new synthesis is that there is a distinction between the so-called Old World Jews and the ones currently involved in global financial hegemony. Am I incorrect in that? What books should I read to learn more?

I don’t know about the Tolstoy comparisons but still a very compelling read.

Thoughts on this? Has Grossman done for WWII what Tolstoy did for the War of 1812?
