What makes Huxley's A brave new world Dystopian rather than Utopian?

Why is Brave New World considered a dystopia when it sounds like the ideal society?

Bernard Marx because sometimes I feel as though I am not quite "normal"

p.s favorite quote
"The greater a man's talents, the greater his power to lead astray. It is better that one should suffer than that many should be corrupted. Consider the matter dispassionately, Mr. Foster, and you will see that no offence is so heinous as unorthodoxy of behaviour. Murder kills only the individual–and, after all, what is an individual?"

I just finished reading this book, and I found it very interesting. I found it very much interesting and I really sympathize with John. The guy goes a bit wacky at the end, but what can you do? I mean, to the civilized world their lives are perfect, but that's only because they are deprived of what they don't know.

Any thoughts on this? Thought we could do some late night analysis. I also would like some suggestions for other utopian/dystopian stories you guys would suggest in the same vein.

Hey /lit/ school assignment on Brave New World, have to write a chapter that wasn't in the book. How does my introduction sound ? Any advise ?

Helmholtz walked with indifference. True, he walked towards the knowledge that lay before him, but his legs carried neither intention nor conviction.
It had been two months since he had been sent into exile and the intolerable disgust and repulsiveness of Helmholtz’s new inhabitants had finally broken him. For all his ego and bravado, he had succumbed to a reclusive nature that Helmholtz himself was unaware he had. The inhabitants of the Falkland Islands were truly a vile group of pariahs. They had horrible customs, such as being un-Fordly unhygienic and everyone knows that cleanliness is next to fordliness. The majority of the abominable inhabitants were extremely old and pathetically fragile. Though to Helmholtz, the most repugnant and unsettling characteristic about these people, was the fact that they were monogamous. If not for this fact, Helmholtz’s curiosity might have got the better of him, but because of his disgust he had become a misanthropist, a hermit, for the entire two month

Hey /lit/
I have an 1000 word assignment on Huxley's Brave New World. The task requires me to "fill a gap" in the existing narrative by telling a short story that is not told in the text.
Any suggestions or thoughts as to what i should write about ?

Anyone else think Bernard was the only likable character? Or was that the point?

Hey /lit/ I am usually a fantasy fan but I'm trying to look more into sci-fi. Any suggestions? I heard Brave New World was very good.

Hey /lit/ so i read Brave New World, I am not a huge fan of it but I feel like I should read something else by the same author for some reason. What would /lit/ recommend by Aldous Huxley?

John the Savage was a coward and character wise was the weakest morally, Bernard was at least honest with his hate for society being selfish.

I would say that Helmholtz was the model of a true man, and the one character we should strive to be like. While not fully developed as I had hoped. His foil roll to Bernard and John goes on to illustrate his superior morality and ability to live in a world that does not conform to his exact desires but still manages to thrive as any man should.

Helmholtz - Alpha
John - Beta
Bernard - Omega

TL:DR helmholtz was a true bro.

Hey /lit/ I haven't been reading for a while and I'm looking to get into again over the rest of the summer. However I don't know where to start. I wanted to read some of the more classical books so I started Catch 22, however I got burned out on it so I stopped.

Can you recommend me a easy to read classic to get started. Something more entertaining then thought provoking.

Pic related, I was kinda looking into it.

Okay, so I just finished reading Brave New World.

Story trudges along for 3/5 of the book, starts to pick up the pace toward the end, and then ends *thud* face-first in the dirt.

What the fuck is this shit? Why is this regarded as a literary classic?

, asked anon sententiously.

I posted on here about a week ago about developing as a writer and eventually getting to the level at which I might become published and enjoy some modicum of success.

It was concluded that I needed to indulge myself in the greats of literary fiction, so I immediately set out to do so. I just finished reading Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and am now looking for another one to jump into.

The only thing, I don't want to read simpleton shit about life or love. I am pretty much only interested in war/adventure epics and speculative fiction.

Please advise.
