what do you think about my hypothesis /lit/?
buddhism in india 5 thousand years ago is the exact same thing as scientific atheism today. Solely due to lack of technological advancement and through the cultural environment of its time, buddhism, to us, sounds like a religion. Whereas we can now speak of the laws of physics and atoms and black holes and such, the materialist of yore had to utilize the vocabulary of his time and place while still expressing the EXACT same god-denying, anti-spiritual sentiments of today. In short the underlying "mythological" framework has simply been replaced by scientism. Merely flowery terms such as "karma", "nirvana" or "rebirth" obscure the fact that behind all the semantics lies the classic atheist doctrine of no-afterlife.
In a similar vein the theories of godless heathens like Schopenhauer and other idealists, eerily similar in their metaphysics to the aforementioned, are now being confirmed through neuroscience.
What I have yet not been able to figure out, however, is if these nihilists have simply been inventing different forms of cope throughout the ages out of cowardice or if it is a silent agreement and perhaps even a full on embrace and glorification.
