About to dive into Malazan. What am I in for? Is it even worth the effort given the supposed complexity, or is that just a meme?

Just finished a book and am looking at this series as a possible next title(s). Thoughts?

also...can anybody summarize the difference between fantasy and this "high fantasy"?

Is Malazan really as confusing and 'hard' as booktubers like to claim?

>The series has received widespread critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the epic scope, plot complexity and characterizations, and fellow authors such as Glen Cook (The Black Company) and Stephen R. Donaldson (The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant) hailing it as a masterwork of the imagination, and comparing Erikson to the likes of Joseph Conrad, Henry James, William Faulkner, and Fyodor Dostoevsky.
I haven't read either Malazan or The City We Became, but most likely they're both just really good genre fiction.

Do these books get better as the the series goes on?
I am listening to Gardens of the Moon because I wanted some genre fiction romp to entertain me while I do the dishes, and while some parts made me roll my eyes a little bit I do enjoy it, so I might actually read it for real if the series is worth it

No mater what people say, this is the only long series that will probably satisfy you after coming from the lord of the rings.

Sanderson is teenage fantasy.

Big fantasy fans: where does Malazan rank for you? Most people I know telling me to read it aren't big fans of the genre in general, so I'm curious what seasoned fantasy readers think.

I have a fantasy itch after finishing Malazan Book of the Fallen. I've narrowed my choices down to The First Law or Gentleman Bastards, as I want something a little lighter than Erikson. Which series should I go with, /lit/terbugs?

Why are the characters in Malazan so fucking boring?? They all fit into 1 of 3 basic archetypes: grizzled tough-guy veterans, mysterious edgelords, or le random "comic relief" (seriously how the fuck do people like Tehol so much he is unbelievably lame)

I'm up to the 8th book and I cannot tell you a thing about the characters or their motivations. They are complete cardboard cutouts and it makes it impossible for me to give a shit about anything that is happening.

Try and describe what is Ganoes' character? or Seren Pedac? Udinaas? They have literally no personality and I feel like I've completely wasted my time reading these books. Most overrated shit ever.

Where were you when genre fiction became literary?
>In his treatise written for The New York Review of Science Fiction, fellow author Stephen R. Donaldson has also praised Erikson for his approach to the fantasy genre, the subversion of classical tropes, the complex characterizations, the social commentary — pointing explicitly to parallels between the fictional Letheras Economy and the US Economy — and has compared him to the likes of Joseph Conrad, Henry James, William Faulkner, and Fyodor Dostoevsky.
>[A Series of Unfortunate events is] Characterized by Victorian Gothic tones and absurdist textuality,[5][6] the books are noted for their dark humor, sarcastic storytelling, and anachronistic elements, as well as frequent cultural and literary allusions.[3][7] They have been classified as postmodern and metafictional writing, with the plot evolution throughout the later novels being cited as an exploration of the psychological process of transition from the idyllic innocence of childhood to the moral complexity of maturity.[8][9][10] Likewise, the final installments of the series are also acknowledged for their escalatingly intricate ethical ambiguity toward philosophical ambivalence, as the nature of some of the Baudelaires' actions becomes increasingly harder to discern from those of their antagonist counterparts and more characters are revealed to be responsible for permanent wrongdoing, despite their identification with the self-proclaimed good side of the tale.[5][11][12]

Just started reading Gardens of the Moon. I dunno what it is but the prose just "feels" weird to me. Like it's kind of abnormal. Is this a common reaction to Erikson?

Sup /lit/

Im currently reading through ASOIAF but thinking about setting it to the side until the fat fuck finishes the series. In the meantime, I have been considering reading the Middle Earth series (Hobbit/LotR/Silmarillion), but recently I discovered the Malazan Book of the Fallen series and it looks very interesting. Has anyone here read it? Is it a good read?
