Do these books get better as the the series goes on?
I am listening to Gardens of the Moon because I wanted some genre fiction romp to entertain me while I do the dishes, and while some parts made me roll my eyes a little bit I do enjoy it, so I might actually read it for real if the series is worth it

Big fantasy fans: where does Malazan rank for you? Most people I know telling me to read it aren't big fans of the genre in general, so I'm curious what seasoned fantasy readers think.

I have a fantasy itch after finishing Malazan Book of the Fallen. I've narrowed my choices down to The First Law or Gentleman Bastards, as I want something a little lighter than Erikson. Which series should I go with, /lit/terbugs?

Why are the characters in Malazan so fucking boring?? They all fit into 1 of 3 basic archetypes: grizzled tough-guy veterans, mysterious edgelords, or le random "comic relief" (seriously how the fuck do people like Tehol so much he is unbelievably lame)

I'm up to the 8th book and I cannot tell you a thing about the characters or their motivations. They are complete cardboard cutouts and it makes it impossible for me to give a shit about anything that is happening.

Try and describe what is Ganoes' character? or Seren Pedac? Udinaas? They have literally no personality and I feel like I've completely wasted my time reading these books. Most overrated shit ever.

Just started reading Gardens of the Moon. I dunno what it is but the prose just "feels" weird to me. Like it's kind of abnormal. Is this a common reaction to Erikson?

Im currently reading through ASOIAF but thinking about setting it to the side until the fat fuck finishes the series. In the meantime, I have been considering reading the Middle Earth series (Hobbit/LotR/Silmarillion), but recently I discovered the Malazan Book of the Fallen series and it looks very interesting. Has anyone here read it? Is it a good read?
