How would one get into writing? I don't want to earn money with it (I mean, even if I tried I couldn't), I just want to pick it up as a hobby and maybe write a few things off my soul, use it as a sort of complentary therapy to my meds. My goal for now is to write a short story but I am completely overwhelmed as to how to do it.
I thought maybe I could just start off by brain storming a plot and characters but I kinda already failed at that. It took me a good 1,5 hours of nonstop thinking and the character I came up with was a cheap self-insert. Is there a step-by-step way to doing things you could recommend? Or general tips for an absolute newbie. Also, should I write in English or my native language (German)? There are some things that just sound better or feelings I can describe more accurately in both languages.

I just read the first chapter of Blood Meridian and, uhm... why is the judge such a huge asshole? His lies got that poor reverend killed and a bunch of others hurt for nothing.

I read this while hiking through Ancient Greek ruins in Turkey. A street dog stole my copy from the table of a cafe I was at and chewed it to fuck and shredded it before I could get it back off the dick. I ended up having finish the last few chapters by looking for pages in a carrier bag of ripped up paper.

Point is it's a really good book and actually made me do a postgrad in classics.

These one word responses are fucking useless. Love /lit/. Def's read Portrait before Uly. Pretty short anyways and worth the read, only took me a day or two.

Just finished Lolita today, it went down pretty smooth.
I liked the way Nabokov wrote, so I reckon I might try something else of his out (either Pale Fire or Ada).
Haven't purchased anything recently, but I did return some books for exchange today - a couple of double copies I've amassed from birthday gifts and the like. I got like 18 bucks for handing in Fear and Loathing and some Dickens.
I'm hoping at least one a month, starting simple and maybe tackling something bigger as I gain momentum. I might finally get a crack at Gravity's Rainbow, I've heard some good stuff about it
