What the fuck was his problem?

Newbie theology question: how do we know that the writings of Paul have any actual authority? Early Christians obviously thought they did -- but they were humans, and thus fallible? How do we know that anything other than recorded words of Christ have authority? (Acknowledging, of course, that the recorded words of Christ were also recorded by fallible men.)
