How is, /lit/? I happen to know there is a lot of English culture-jerk in it, but as a Scottish American I'm willing to muscle through for a good enough story.

To OP:

Try "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke. It's an alternate late 18th century book where wizardry comes back to England. At one point the main character fights alongside Lord Nelson. Male protagonist with understandable dedication and love for his wife, though this isn't the crux of the book.

If you want something classic, "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, if you haven't already read this in high school. The main character is a little girl and there's the occasional feminist rumination (like proper ladies are silly and dresses are dumb), but it's mostly about family love and justice.
