There are people who don't read fiction that often
When they do, they want escapism, because they get enough of real life
many of them are smart people, consummate professionals, caretakers, busy-bodies
but they wanna kick back and enjoy some dumb fiction
others are more immersed in fiction, more often, and start to notice the flaws.
they might be less able to deal with real life than the other type of consumer mentioned above, and yet they will demand more realism from their fiction

a dislike of realism is indicative of noting other than a dislike of realism

to say otherwise is to be invoking intellectually lazy stereotypes, that is, to project onto reality the very unrealistic fictional tropes you take issue with: Supremely oblivious

I don't think Christians are stupid.

who am I to pass judgement on billions?

I think very powerful institutions arm people with the intellectual resilience to doubt doubt from a very young age, for better or for worse.

There have been many Christians who are smarter, better, and more resourceful than me. And there will be more in the future. Faith arms people with focus and prevents them from being depressed. They attribute this to God, but I attribute it to the faith itself. Faith is amazing. Religion is amazing. It gives people a community and all sorts of superpowers, but it all comes down to a fundamental misattribution being the central thesis.

The Torah
Not out of antisemitism, but because it would've stopped the entire Abrahamic trilogy and resulted in a way different world, full of radical Zorastrian terrorists and Roman Polytheist America.

You're just mad that you can't tap into the contemporary cultural zeitgeist as well as the collective mythos of humanity and produce a fun, relateable, marketable series that rakes in billions of dollars, an enormous fan base, and countless derivative works.

It's okay, I am too.

Something like the KKK is hard to sell to audiences. Same with ISIS and Bolsheviks. This is an open ended question. I doubt changing the aesthetics or the politics of the individual is enough. I want universally- or at least widely-applicable techniques here.

>Writers aren't supposed to censor themselves because people won't understand their work.

I agree.

>The deeper and more profound a piece of literature is the longer it will be remembered.

Correct. To an extent.

>And this middle school social studies class alternate history book isn't anything special.

I agree.

Hmm... your post has the tone of a refutation even though it only says things I agree with. I'm starting to feel like maybe you took more away from my post than there was to take away.

I'm telling you WHY martin writes the way that he does: To sell books that get published easily. To support himself. To enjoy himself.

Writing books that are intellectual and artistic achievement takes a level of work most authors are not capable of. Not being a name that shows up in literary textbooks in 200 years does not make you a hack. It makes you normal. And even if Martin is a hack... so what? Why fixate on him? Just write something better and never mention him. Any press is good press. Dogging on someone just emboldens and validates their fans.

Hater talk doesn't work. Sorry if that sounds stupid to you, but it's how things fundamentally work until the MINDS of most of the public VOLUNTARILY decide to have higher standards.

That will be a while.
