>You aren't going to mine any fresh gold from Crime and Punishment 150 years after the fact, no matter how great it is
Well you clearly missed the point of reading the classics. It's not that you're going to discover something new to the world, it's that you're going to discover something new to YOU and get CAUGHT UP to where everyone who already read Crime and Punishment IS. How the fuck are you going to contribute anything good to contemporary literature if you haven't read the classics? On accident? Are you going to revolutionize mathematics without learning multiplication?

Anyway I don't like Bloom based on what I've heard from several of his lectures. I've used his list of "the canon" as a starting point but there's more value in the critiques other people write than in slavishly following his list. In fact I rather think pic rel is more useful.

Yeah they're really good and start with the greeks isn't a meme. Anything good written since then in the West references or derives from the Greeks, so if you want to get the most out of your reading you need to start with the greeks.

I want to get into literature but I don’t want to start with the Greeks. Can I just read American Psycho instead and call myself an enjoyer of literature or do I seriously have to follow this guide?

I’m going to follow this guide and I already got Mythology and The Iliad + Odyssey at my local library. Any advice in general about the novels, and do I have to read the Norse section of Mythology?

Thucydides, and then on to whatever period of history interests you. But reading the rest of the Greeks wouldn't hurt either.

I did, there were some books I probably wouldn't have looked twice at that I ended up really enjoying and it stepped me out of my comfort zone as well as exposed me to a good variety of classics.
I felt like I learned a lot and would recommend it. This is my next chart. I'm about 300 pages into Hamilton's mythology. It's supposed to be my 2022 reading list but I'll probably finish early.

I've read about 15 19th/20th century classics and I'm well-acquainted with basic philosophy. I plan on understanding the history of both literature and philosophy in a lot of detail I'm using the lit philosophy guide for philosophy but I'm not entirely sure how I could integrate literature into it and I still don't know exactly where to start with literature. Anyone able to help me out?
