there was a thread like this a while ago in reverse

"I posted this a while back but want to post it again to see if people have the same opinion.

See, I met a nice guy and he said he was a graduate literature student. We talked about poetry some; he likes Yeats and Whitman and the British romantics and the like. We went back to his place and talked in his front room. He had a nice small library of mostly poetry but also some philosophy and books on religion.

He said a few things about studying children's literature, really liking children's literature, etc. I thought he was taking a course in it and didn't think much of it. But when we talked later, I realized he was actually SPECIALIZING in it.

Later, in his room, I saw his real library, which consists of shit tons of children's literature books. Everything from fairy tales like Hans Christian Anderson and Grimm's fairy tales, to Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan and The Secret Garden and those things I remember reading when I was like 10. He also had picture books. And tons of Newbery books and stuff. So, this creeped me out.

To make things worse, he had a framed picture of the real Alice girl, like a black and white picture of the little girl who inspired Alice in Wonderland, and he had a big picture of Peter Pan and Wendy on his wall too. I started thinking he might be a pedophile or have Peter Pan syndrome or some creepy relationship with his mother or something.

What do you guys make of that? Is it weird for a grown man to specialize in children's literature for his masters degree? He said he doesn't want to teach children or anything. He wants to teach at the college level and write books. But it still seems pedo-ish and weird to me.

Is it normal for adults to really like children's literature??"

Current:
Parades End - Ford Maddox Ford (3/4 done)
The Education of Henry Adams - Henry Adams
Viking Portable Chekhov
Right Livelihoods - Rick Moody
Salammbo - Flaubert
The Fugitive - Proust
Troilus and Cressida - Shakespeare
I Drink for a Reason - David Cross

That is all.

FYI Capsguy - just wanted to tell you I've just ordered Grossman's Life and Fate, based mostly on the recommendations of two people: yourself and Tariq Ali. Not bad company to be in. (Ali said it was almost better than War and Peace on reread.) Thanks!
