Most sci fi sucks balls imo. I suggest reading Poul Anderson's Star Fox; it's an easy military sci fi with plenty of music, humour, action, and personality. He also wrote fantasy fwiw. But he was also a physics major so lots of his sci fi is seen as hard sci fi. If you don't want to study the sciences and write sci fi, then you might find a niche of soft sci fi or genre blending to write to, but I'd advise against it if you don't want to embrace at least some scientific understanding (though that doesn't have to be outright materialism, nor humanism - which was historically bound up with sci fi). Another easy author is Kurt Vonnegut because his stuff is quite funny and accessible, though he later disparaged himself for being labelled a "for teenage boys" sci fi writer.
