What does /lit/ think about Henry David Thoreau? Going to be picking up Walden and Civil Disobedience soon.

The more I write, the more I find my plots falling into a linear and predictable pattern. Everything tends to go from simple to complex in a very regular quest-style manner.

I want suggestions on how to change this, how to start from complex and stay complex the whole damn way through. Not just a slam-bang opening, something far deeper.

Any ideas?
