Oh no it's so hard and taxing to write puerile power fantasies. I sped-read a couple of his Death Ship books back when he got banned off Amazon for buying review boosters, they were essentially a one of those "abducted by the sexy aliens" books for women except with some action scenes that felt like reading a bad Mass Effect knockoff and the protagonist was the one doing the hole-filling.

I figure he puts about as much time into writing them as authors who write paperback airport novels about Dex Cooper, Super Spy chasing the mad lib villians of the week.

Dude is (or was, rather) basically writing harlequin romance novels and then putting on a turtleneck and acting like he's a "serious author."

I think rather than the bar being raised it's more over-saturation due to a growing market. There's enough out there now that readers can afford to pick and chose "the good stuff" written by authors who take care with their stuff instead of churning it out as fast as possible to make bank.
