To find the prerequisites we must simply compile a list of great writers - Melville, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, etc - and extrapolate similar characteristics. For starters, they’re all old and achieved literary excellence later in their lives, not when they were young. Second, none were materialistic, they focused on religious/spiritual themes. Third, all had incredibly vivid prose that expressed clearly what they were trying to say. Fourth, all had a realistic, non-idealistic view of human nature. Fifth, all were “anti-reddit,” so to speak; none ever tried to be cool or clever or dunk on religion for easy points. Sixth, all could be described as philosophical writers, that is, they wrote to express the truth of the world, not genre fiction for mere entertainment. And lastly, they were all men.

What I love about Sowell is how all of the left’s usual dismissals don’t work on him. Say he’s racist who doesn’t understand black people? Nope, he’s black himself and personally lived through shit like Jim Crow. Say he doesn’t understand the poor? Nope, he grew up in poverty. Say he doesn’t understand Marx? Nope, he’s well versed in leftist theory and was a Marxist himself for over a decade. Say he’s privileged? Nope, he started from a shit environment and terrible household and worked his way up. His entire existence is a contradiction to their ideology.
