>Philosophy as a Rite of Rebirth challenges our understanding of philosophy - indeed it challenges many centuries of assumptions which have reduced othodox philosophy to a shadow of its original.Uzdavinys returns to the very roots of philosophy in Ancient Egypt, and shows why the Greeks revered that land of pyramids and priest-kings as the source of divine wisdom. Bringing his understanding of many great traditions of philosophy - Indian, Islamic, Greek, and others - he presents the case for considering philosophy as a human participation in a theophany, or divine drama. Casting aside the unnatural limitations of modern philosophy, as well as the grave misunderstandings of Egyptologists, radical and exciting possibilities emerge for the serious philosopher. Incredibly dense, comes with a glossary, took me a long time to work through it. Five months to read 280 pages, and I'm usually pretty quick. Frankly I can't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a basic grounding in NeoPlatonism to start with unless you're willing to do the slog of never letting a word go by unresearched. Uzdavinys covers the relationship between Egyptian religion and Greek philosophy, the Weltanschauung of the ancients, symbolism - myth - semiotics - Being - in Egyptian thought, rituals, the animation of statues, philosophical rebirth ie; becoming immortal.

Are there any books that could be labeled as "anthropology of philosophy" i.e. books that discuss what drives cultures to engage in philosophical reflection, why some cultures developed a unique philosophical outlook while others didn't etc? Pic related is a good example of what I'm looking for
