Is it genre fiction? According to Nabokov it isn't literary fiction.

>tfw I don't read Lolita in public because to an untrained eye it looks like a steamy porn novel, and to somebody that knows what it is you look like a pedophile

What did you guys think? This will be full of spoilers obviously.

Was it partially lolita's fault for seducing a already weak man?

While Humbert is partially sane monster on the best of days is he not still a pitiable human being?

Did the final stretch of the journey with Lolita before she dissapears..descend a bit into lunacy for anyone? I couldn't even tell if the man following them was a real person or not by that point?

Was there any salvation at all for Humbert after the first episode of coitus?

Could they have both forgiven each other and lived a normal life as Humburg and daughter?

Was there ever a more pitiable creature depiction in fiction as poor Humbert asking for a glimmer of hope lest he throw away his entire life in subsequent actions, begging in tears for the pregnant, old, and not even attractive to him anymore Lo to just tell him even if a lie, to give him the hope that she might one day come live with him?

“We had been everywhere. We had really seen nothing. And I catch myself thinking today that our long journey had only defiled with a sinuous trail of slime the lovely, trustful, dreamy, enormous country that by then, in retrospect, was no more to us than a collection of dog-eared maps, ruined tour books, old tires, and her sobs in the night — every night, every night — the moment I feigned sleep.”

ITT: We discuss our recent readings.

Pic related.

Now I'll admit if it weren't for this website, I would not have considered reading this book, at all, but 4chan has it's ways.

But I must admit, it was a genuinely good read. Once you get past the obvious taboo and eroticism, it winds up being a truly poetic and tragic story. The characters are interesting and complex. Humbert is pathetic, but still hilarious. Lolita herself is a pleasant blend between an erotic love interest and a criminal just as cunning and manipulative as Humbert himself. I'd read it again.

9/10 would recommend.

So what about you, anon?

What should I read next from Nabokov? I tried Lolita and loved his style but thought the book was boring. Invitation to a Beheading sounds most interesting to me but I want to hear what /lit/ thinks

Related to what >>4588642 said, are there really people who are intelligent enough to know what "Lolita" is but dumb enough to take an issue with you reading it? Unless it's been on the news in the past few months, no one's going to think you're raping babies with your buddy Lucifer.

I read Lolita on a bus to/from work (in NYC). I remember one time while I was reading it, a woman got on with her young daughter (maybe around 8-10 years old), and told her to go sit in the open seat next to me. I shit my pants.

It was this cover, by the way.

I'm about halfway through this book and am trapped in psychological warfare. Seriously, I need a break every three chapters to decide if I'm going to puke, cry or praise Nabokov for such an incredible look into the mind of a predator. Anybody else ever read this?
