LotR is not really for kids in any sense, it is an invented myth about society in decline. Hippies read the book in the 60s and were captivated by the imagery of elves, orcs, wizards etc. probably because they were smoking weed everyday. Because of this the generation that the post-hippies raised was raised with LotR, and consequently developed ridiculously shallow readings of it that they never bothered to go back and flesh out with adult reasoning because the books are long and most of the fandom that surrounds them is composed of loathly ~nerds~ who read bad fantasy books. And that shallowness of reading is pretty frequently articulated on /lit/. If you think everything Tolkien wrote was "just fun" I seriously feel bad for you.

the best part about Garden of Earthly Delights is that most other Ren artists included little angels playing trumpets and flutes in their paintings in really sentimental ways to the point of cliche so Bosch put them all in Hell instead, probably eating the other artists

my favorite of Bosch's is Christ Carrying the Cross, most of all for the sense that light of God is collapsing under some massive weight of humanity, but he also painted Costanza once
