I would recommend Demons by Dostoevsky. The plot is not the similar at all to Monster, but Nikolai Stavrogin reminded me a lot of Johan Liebert. Both are cold, controlled, calculating, cunning, and charismatic. They're both worshiped by the characters around them as well. Pretty interesting.
