Hey /lit/ I would like to get into H.P. Lovecraft's works.

Is there any particular story of his I should read first? Is there any order any of his stories should be read in? What do you think is his best story?

Yes /lit/, it's time for the never-ending discussion cycle to once again be whelped into it's putrid existence.

The best order in which to read the works of HP Lovecraft as a beginner? What about revisiting his works? Which stand the test of time? Which ones can you not fucking stand already?

>"It is a fact, however, that sentimentalists exaggerate the woes of the average negro. Millions of them would be perfectly content with servile status if good physical treatment and amusement could be assured them, and they may yet form a well-managed agricultural peasantry."

oh baby

If anything they made it better as it was the basis of some of the horror.
What's rather funny to me is that despite him holding above-average racist views in his day and saying them out loud his own actions were actually less racist than most modern liberals. He settled down in an immigrant heavy area, he married a jew, he mentored an aspiring jewish writer and the cat he named Nigger-man was one of his most beloved companions.

>H. P. Lovecraft
>straight up jacks entire ideas from Robert W. Chambers' The King in Yellow stories that were published decades prior to his own (Cthulhu = The King, the city of Carcosa = the city of R'lyeh, Necronomicon = the play, etc.)
>called out on it but initially claims he never read them (later claims he read them AFTER he started writing his own stories and that he was a big fan)
>later more or less claims Chambers' work as his own and incorporates names, characters and even direct story references into his Mythos in some cruel form of mockery
>doesn't give a fuck, shits all over Chambers and calls him a brainless retard in a letter to Clark Ashton Smith
>nowadays nobody really remembers Robert W. Chambers and Lovecraft is the head horror honcho in town
>even modern stories based directly on The King in Yellow consider themselves to be a part of Lovecraft's universe

hehehehe mission accomplished

>Copy a chapter from book 2.

>but don't copy someone else's style.

This is no way in developing your own style at all. Your own style should evolve naturally, from reading and writing. Forcing yourself into another writer's style is not only painstaking and boring but in the end you'll find people telling you that your style is, "Too much like X," or "Too much like Y"

I'm actually trying to write some horror at the moment.
It is however rather hard to think about something that actually gets under the skin.

I try to keep things subtle and use language that isn't too strong. I know how these stories should be structured and what patterns should be used.

However if I think about ideas for a specific plot I always land somewhere Lovecraft and many others have already been and I run into danger of re-writing their ideas unknowingly.

There are a few things I'd like to try out though. Stuff that people can relate to maybe.

Something about moldy houses, excessive hygiene, extreme OCD and spiralling into madness.

On another note:
Where is that image from?

Another Lovecraft thread!

So, /lit/, I just read Dagon and Polaris. I got the jist of Dagon, but I'm fuzzy on a few details because I'm still getting used to Lovecraft's eccentric style.

How do you think the creature, the strange realm, and the monolith in this story relates to the rest of the Cthulhu Mythos?
Other general thoughts on Dagon?

And as for Polaris,
Does /lit/ think the main character was actually from Lomar and was under some strange curse that trapped him in earthly dreams, or was it all in his mind?
Other additional thoughts on Polaris?

the part near the end of "The Colour Out of Space", where Mr Lovecraft just fucking takes off:

"... and over all the rest reigned that riot of luminous amorphousness, that alien and undimensioned rainbow of cryptic poison from the well - seething, feeling, lapping, reaching, scintillating, straining and malignly bubbling in its cosmic and unrecognizable chromaticism."

FUCK YES. you KNOW he had a hard-on when he wrote that.
