Probably. It is a series dear to my heart that I like to recommend.

Generally the story isn't one big joke in these books.
Oh there's puns and comedy and a generally wholesome demeanor, but the books do try to keep the central premise on the story and characters. Be that an adventure or an exploration of the human condition. Several of the books deal with more mature themes, such as death, in a mature way. For example there is a rather harsh depiction of violence induced miscarriage along with the emotional repercussions in what is supposed to be a "young adult" book.
You could try to read Mort.

You could read some Discworld, a random book will do. The audio books are even up on youtube.

1. Yes.
2. At one of the red arrows, the Watch novels is a good bet, but pick whatever seems interesting.

Bear in mind that the first two Rincewind books and the first Witches book (the first to be published) are a little unripe when it comes to the world, some small details are different in the later books when the world takes form. And the last few books to be published are also a little lacking, but owerall most books are good. Reading in publishing order is also an option.

The Poseidon's Children trilogy is, uncharacteristically for Alastair Reynolds, positive when the future of human society is concerned. Of course there are some problems encountered in the narrative, but no galactic calamities or nothing like the Melding Plague or other horrible stuff from his Revelation Space books.

Look who's late to the party. There's even some movies and two old animated movies made of some of the books you can check out after you've read the corresponding books.
There's even stuff like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Was4vsxLEng - amateur theater bursting with cleavage.

Well I guess I've never ruled it out, just been putting it off. It seems like another loooong fantasy series and my to-read list already seems long enough, even though I've been hearing good things about it for a while now.

Also I finally read a little about the series on Wikipedia.

A question: Can at some point the separate Malazan series by Esslemont and Erikson be actually read in parallel? As in does it enhance the experience if one would read them switching authors by the in-world chronological order? Like SG1 and Atlantis?
