>Below the hills a marshy plain
>Infects what I so long have been retrieving;
>This stagnant pool likewise to drain
>Were now my latest and my best achieving.
>To many millions let me furnish soil,
>Though not secure, yet free to active toil;
>Green, fertile fields, where men and herds go forth
>At once, with comfort, on the newest earth,
>And swiftly settled on the hill’s firm base,
>Created by the bold, industrious race.
>A land like Paradise here, round about;
>Up to the brink the tide may roar without,
>And though it gnaw, to burst with force the limit,
>By common impulse all unite to hem it.
>Yes! to this thought I hold with firm persistence;
>The last result of wisdom stamps it true:
>He only earns his freedom and existence
>Who daily conquers them anew.
>Thus here, by dangers girt, shall glide away
>Of childhood, manhood, age, the vigorous day:
>And such a throng I fain would see,—
>Stand on free soil among a people free!
>Then dared I hail the Moment fleeing:
>“Ah, still delay—thou art so fair!”
>The traces cannot, of mine earthly being,
>In æons perish,—they are there!
>In proud fore-feeling of such lofty bliss,
>I now enjoy the highest Moment,—this!

Weird. This feels like it could be a direct personal attack on me but it’s been quite a few years since I graduated and have since reached a really positive place in my life. If I was just a few years younger reading this would have wrecked me, but instead I feel emboldened by seeing how far I’ve come. We’re all gonna make it bros

Hey /lit/bros. Here's a little window into my life. I've struggled for many years with attention and memory. It was the most debilitating, insufferable life. I was never suicidal, but dying would have been a blessing. Nonetheless, I strived against my mystery disorder and maintained a love for reading. It was tough. It was demoralizing to read the same sentence fifty times and still be clueless. I sometimes wondered if reading was worth it if I'd just forget everything immediately thereafter. The same logic applied to life itself: if memories are so fleeting, why make anymore? But I stuck with it, often visiting /lit/ for guidance and inspiration. I read what I could, despite my embarrassment for reading ten-times longer than the average person.

After awhile, I couldn't take it anymore. I reattempted seeing a psychiatrist and got diagnosed with inattentive ADHD. Then I spent months cycling through stimulants that only partially helped, but ultimately didn't solve the problem. It just slightly boosted my willpower and attention span. Eventually, in desperation, I started to reflect on my cognitive processes and daily behaviors, leaving no stone unturned. Then it clicked. I don't have ADHD, nor do I have some rare disease, brain tumor, or birth defect. This entire time, it appears to have been "pure o" OCD. I was utterly shocked by this revelation, but in retrospect it couldn't have been more obvious. I couldn't read or think properly because my attention was in constant war with intrusive thoughts: random memories, ruminations, guilt, regret, fear, existential dread, etc. Now that I sorted this out, I've been on a steady diet of antidepressants for the past month. Today I'm starting to read and retain information without difficulty for the first time in forever. It amazes me just how manageable life is becoming. And I'm not at all resentful of my wasted years. Struggling against the grind brought me gratitude and discipline. It was worth it in the end. Thank you /lit/ for nudging me ahead. I think I'm gonna make it.

I read a book that motivated me. I know from previous experiences that this motivation will pass. Can you and how do you stay motivated for a long time?

I'm an extremely complex and deep person, with plenty of chaotic thoughts, existential doubts, anguish, a permanently unsatisfied, desperate, lost individual, with philosophical inclinations... I'm looking for books that will match my sensitive and profound soul
